How the Muse Scam Works
In this scam, a scammer reaches out to an artist or platform user, posing as someone interested in purchasing their work for a prestigious project, such as an art exhibit or a commercial campaign. They may even mention working with an anonymous "client." The scammer insists on paying for the rights to the artwork, often using a fraudulent check as payment.
After the check is deposited, the scammer asks the artist to send a portion of the funds to another party or back to the scammer, claiming it’s for shipping, material fees, or taxes. However, the check is fake, and when it bounces, the artist is left financially liable for the money they sent.
Typical Muse Scam Tactics
The scammer will: insist to pay, even if you freely offer them the material.
The scammer insists: on using a check for payment, often with elaborate reasons.
Requests to: return part of the funds after the check is deposited.
Anonymity: around the "client" or the project's legitimacy.
What to Do if You're Targeted
Ignore, block, and report any suspicious accounts on social media.
If you receive a fraudulent check, DO NOT deposit it. Contact your bank’s fraud department immediately if you’ve already deposited it, as banks may close accounts involved with fraudulent checks.
